The documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” has been on television. When we watched it, we realised that scientists have an important job to do. In this documentary they say we have about ten years to try to change global warming. Our group have decided to see what effect this is having on Antarctica.

Each year there are scientists and support staff at four stations Mawson, Davis and Casey in Antarctica and Macquarie Island. They sign a contract to go for tweleve months and do not see their families in all that time. Most of the staff are scientists and the rest are support staff. It can be quite dangerous living in Antarctica. we found out that a couple of years ago, an American doctor had to operate on herself!

We found out that there are six types of penguins in Antarctica, three brush-tailed, – the Adelie, chinstrap, and gentoo; one crested – the macaroni; and two species of Aptenodytes – the king and emperor. It is important that scientists keep track of numbers especially now that climate change is becoming a big issue.

When we were finding out about the work scientists do we found out that they do lots of different things. When Antarctica was first explored, it was because different countries wanted to find out all about this strange place. Countries used to explore to claim countries and continents for themselves. Scientists helped countries to identify useful resources. I don’t think this should happen today.
